The Bible has a lot to say about respecting those who are older. Job 12:12 says, “Wisdom is with aged men, with long life is understanding.” Proverbs 16:31 says, “The glory of young men is their strength and the honor of old men is their gray hair.” Proverbs 20:29 says, “A gray head is a crown of glory; it is found in the way of righteousness.” First Timothy 5:1-2 says, “Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father . . . to the older women as mothers.”
The Bible also has a lot to say about caring for those who are older. Psalm 68:5 says, “A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows is God in His holy habitation.” James 1:27 says, “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress.” First Timothy 5:3 says, “Honor widows who are widows indeed.”
Here at Plainfield Bible Church, we take these words seriously. We believe it is our duty and privilege to care for the seniors among us. To do this, we have created a special ministry called “Senior Saints” that serves our members who are 65 years of age and older. Throughout the years, the Senior Saints have been a blessing to our church family in numerous ways. They continue to bless us with their wisdom, their prayers, their involvement in other activities in the church, and their faithfulness. Some of our Senior Saints have been with us from the start of the church in 1962.
To honor them and repay their kindness, our church serves them in numerous ways. Here are a few of them:
Senior Saints Luncheon
On the 3rd Sunday of every month, Lee and Christy Faulkner host a luncheon in the Great Room after the morning service. The lunch is usually served by members of the Teen Ministry and provides an opportunity for our older members to enjoy a meal and visit. For more information about this, please contact Lee Faulkner.
Senior Saints Visitation
To ensure that all of our shut-ins and members in Nursing Homes are being served, this year we instituted a Senior Saints Visitation Ministry. The goal of the ministry is to reach out to our elderly members who can no longer attend services. In doing this, we seek to “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). For more information about this, please contact Dan Pell.
Senior Saints Service
There are many other needs that come under the oversight of a ministry like this one and many of them are met by our Service Team. Various physical tasks would fall into this list like leaf raking, yard mowing, snow removal, and helping Seniors find rides to church. Since our church cannot meet every physical need that arises, we focus on those that are of a more serious nature but set aside special days throughout the year to help in any way that we can. One example of this is our Leaf Removal Day that we have every Fall. For more information about this, please contact Jim Wilson.
